Instructions to Create a Pop-up Book

In order to create an Atlantis Pop-up book I had to follow many steps. I broke my project into several parts. The first part was the planning phase. During this part I watched a video on how to create a pop-up book. I found this video on you tube. It's title was How to create a 3D pop-up. Second I made a rough draft and blue prints for my pop-up. Then I decided which things would pop out. After this I went shopping for supplies. Walmart had almost everything I needed. We had some of the supplies I needed at home as well.
The next part of my project was to design my cover page. I printed out letters and then traced them onto fabric. Next I glued shells and the octopus medallion onto the cover. The next part of my project was to design the popups and figure out how they would work. This took along time and many tries. I also made a flap to sink the city of Atlantis. Finally the Poseidon pages looked good. I painted those pages at home and at school. Next, I decided to what to say on the recordable cards. I had to keep it short because the cards would only record for a few seconds. There is music in the background because all of the recordable cards had music in the background. It was fun choosing the cards with the best songs. I Am The Champion was the champion.
Next came the assembly portion of the project. I hot glued the cards between two glued pages. I was scared for a minute because one of the cards would not work after I glued it in. But I found a way around it by pressing a buttons so I marked the place to press. Finally I used tape to hold the book together. Below is a numbered list of steps to complete.

  1. Watch instructional video. You Tube : How to make a 3D Popup
  2. Create a rough draft with number of pages. Also decide which items need to be made to pop up.
  3. Determine what color pages you want and make a list of other supplies.
  4. Go shopping for supplies
  5. Print Out letters and trace them onto fabric to create cover. Glue other interesting items.
  6. Cut out and paint or color all elements to the pop-up
  7. Make flap with a Pull-down to sink Atlantis.
  8. Record story with recordable cards.
  9. Assemble all pages of book.
  10. Paint any white space.
  11. Bind the book.

The Lost Story of Atlantis
The lost story of Atlantis is a tale of a sunken culture. It could have existed in either the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea thousands of years ago. It is almost impossible to decide what research is factual and what is mythical. This is because the city has never been found. People today continue to discuss what the truth about Atlantis is.

Atlantis was a city that was also a continent and an island. Legend has it that Atlantis was very technologically advanced. The royal family of Atlantis was supposedly created from a marriage between Poseidon and a mortal woman. This mortal named Ciero had 5 sets of twin boys. The oldest was named Atlas. This royal family ruled Atlantis following Poseidon’s guidelines for centuries. However they began to marry more mortals and share their technology with them.

One story says that the gods worried that the people of Atlantis were too technically advanced. The gods gave Atlantis a warning to be careful with their new inventions. Disobeying, the Atlantians did not heed the warning. Therefore they further angered the gods. The gods decided to sink Atlantis. According to legend Poseidon, the sea god, carried out this task. Poseidon stormed into the sea and with one big whoosh Atlantis sank into the water.

Plato a famous Greek philosopher was the first to write about Atlantis. He wrote the story of Poseidon sinking in Atlantis. Plato told a story that at the center of Atlantis was a great temple that had a statue of Poseidon with a chariot that had twelve horses. Plato wrote many details of the city including that the technology of Atlantis included a warm water fountain and a cold water fountain right next to each other. However many people think Plato gave too many details in his story of Atlantis. They believe that Plato made up these stories and that Atlantis never really existed. Other people believe that Atlantis never sank but that Iceland is Atlantis because it is the same size and shape as Atlantis.

Whether you chose to believe in Atlantis or not is up to you – however I believe it existed. The fact that people find the story of Atlantis so interesting is very important. It is important because it leads scientist to continue searching for Atlantis. Recently off the coast of Spain in the shallow ocean floor geologist believe they have discovered remains of the city of Atlantis buried in the mud. Also on the beach of Florida several columns have been uncovered. Archeologist and geologist who believe in the lost city will continue their search to find it.
